“In the Meadow” – Cebu, 12 November 2017

road trip:
urban tour
city-bound
but i
yearn
for the
seaside
with the
cold salt
breezes
of what
passes for
winter
wafting over
my skin.

a face
burned onto
the surface
of my
mind
now indelible
like a
scar
and i
tell myself
two thousand
or so
kilometres
isn’t so
far away
but what
excuse
and what
reason
do i
have
to go
without me
looking like
a fool?

grimly steeling
myself
as the
car
meanders down
the highway
into a
city
grimy and
grey
and my
heart
withers within.

This Point of No Return

walter-molino-throwing-guy-down-stairs
“Lesson to a Thug” – Walter Molino, published c. 1960s

cutting
all ties
to a
past
best left
forgotten:
ending the
nightmares
sans regrets.

erasing
names and
numbers,
the addresses
never
to be
written to
ever again;
letters
torn and
torched,
discs and
vinyls
tossed out
and broken,
pictures
erased from
drives
physical and
virtual and
mental.

driving out
the demons
the nightmares
that plagued
me
making this
parting
of ways
final.

“A Light in the Darkness” – Muntinlupa, 15 December 2017

light a
candle
in the
darkness
of this
winter night
and draw
to the
warmth
those who
seek
a little
love
a little
tenderness
in a
world
gone cold
and blank
and sad
and unfeeling.

reach out
to the
lonely
and those
who seem
to have
lost
their way
and guide
them
to safety
to succour
to shelter.

give
of yourself
like a
candle
gives off
gives out
light
and life
for it
is in
giving
that we
receive
and it
is in
loving
that we
find love
in a
world
made dark
by hate.

“Snail’s Pace” – Cebu, 11 November 2017

why
does time
have to
move
so slowly:
a wearying
tedium
of seconds
and minutes
and hours
ticking by;
grains
of sand
trickling
from one
bulb
to another.

pacing
across the
floor,
tugging my
hair
to allay
my qualms –
these jitters
that make
my hands
shake
my pulse
race;
so impatient.

sighing
at the
ponderous
pace of
the hands
across the
face,
and i
feel
the despair
the agony
of waiting
and dreading
that it
might all
be in
vain.

“Light the Night” – Muntinlupa, 01 January 2018

the sky
blooms
with blossoms
of fire
lighting
up the
night
and every
mortal eye
bedazzled
and awed.

one year
dies
and another
born
and we
put our
heartaches
and hurts
and woes
to the
torch:
burnt offering
for hope
and peace
and joy.

and we
raise
our glasses
and sing
dirges
to the
year
that was
and whisper
prayers
for the
year
that comes
and face
the dawn
bravely.

“Caged Light” – Alabang, 16 December 2017

this
was the
year
when i
stepped
out of
the cage
that held
me
for so
long.

dropped
all those
who let
me down,
let go
of the
things
that held
me down,
got rid
of the
things
that got
all toxic
and dark
and grim;
slammed
the door
in the
face
of the
past
and locked
it in
forever
and threw
away
the key.

tested
my wings
and took
flight –
and it
feels
so good.

Tears After Reading Hafez

23755011_10155442693009177_7104729218516495547_n
Excerpt from The Nightingales are Drunk by Hafez

rereading
the verses
of yore
as i
sip
the first
cup
of my
day
and it
does not
ease
and it
does not
soothe
the loneliness
this miasmic
solitude
i find
myself in.

restlessly
impatiently
flipping through
the pages
and finding
no comfort
for once;
giving into
the tears
i have
fought
i have
sought
to keep
at bay.

wishing
against any
and all
odds
to be
elsewhere:
in a
garden
full of
roses
at their
most fragrant,
by the
shore
at dusk,
by the
side
of the
beloved –
but that,
alas,
is a
dream
too hopeless
too impossible
even
for a
dreamer
like me.
