“Traffic” – Manila, 27 January 2017

a drive
down the
streets
i explored
in my / youth:
unexpected jaunt
into years
gone by
when the
world
did not
sit so
heavily
on my
shoulders
and the
world
was mine
to conquer.

the grimy
streets
of the
students’ quarter
are as
shabby
are as
frantic
are as
chaotic
as they
have always
been
and the
young
chatter in
droves
roam in
flocks
like so
many calves
being driven
being fattened
for the
slaughter;
oh
do not
grow up
so fast –
you know
not
the madness
that awaits
you!

in the
midst
of smoke
of grime
of memory
upon memory
unbidden
i look
back upon
the past
and think:
was it
all
worth growing
up for?
