“Dancers” – Budji Layug, date unknown

the dancers
spin
and twirl
and shake
and tremble
in their
frenzy.

sacred
yet profane,
blesséd
but damned
as they
seek the
intercession
of both
gods
and monsters
in a
rite
older than
the words
transcribed
in books
in scrolls.

primal energies
buzzing
all around
eldritch electricity
crackling
through the
stillness
or the
howling
of the
winds.

like a
shaman
of old
i watch
i sit
i scry,
divining
the will
of the
universe
through these
cards
in my
hands
and smile
or sigh
at the
visions
descending
on me
on this
sacred night.
