In the Heart of the Labyrinth

“Eros and Psyche” – Artist and date unknown

at the
heart
of a
labyrinth
dark and
grim
in the
midst
of thickets
of thorns
and roses
redder
darker
than blood
stands a
tower
shrouded in
mists.

a wary
shieldmaiden
inches her
way
up the
spiralling stairs
blade drawn
footsteps
all silent
lest a
foe
hid in
the shadows.

and she
stops
before a
chamber door
heavy
oaken
bound with
iron
and lore
and blood
and a
hatred
ancient and
intense.

but:
it moves
as she
places a
hand
over the
lock,
it opens
and swings
to give
her entrance.

and candle
after candle
flickers
to life:
a glowing
path
leading her
further in;
and she
finds
a youth
bound in
slumber
at the
end
of the
chamber.

her dagger
set
to strike,
the shieldmaiden
moves closer
on silent
feet…

closer,
ever closer…
