Chapter Opener from Gregory Maguire’s “Mirror, Mirror”

fine
go ahead
blame me
for your
nightmares;
you are
after all
responsible
for mine.

funny
how people
twist and
turn and
transform
innocent words
into pure
wickedness
turning the
unsuspecting
into villains
of the
tale
when all
they wanted
was answers
to questions,
was time
to think,
was clarity,
was love.

fine
go ahead
condemn me
for my
stupidity
for my
obsession –
your words
not mine –
and i
in turn
curse you –
though it
breaks me –
for not
ever
being brave
enough
to tell
me off
to my
face.

coward:
you made
your bed,
you lie
in it.
