Past Present Future

“Papuntang Maynila” – Dominic Rubio (from the Pamilyang Pilipino series), c. 2010s

looking back
upon the
storied past
of a
nation
even as
a new
page
is marked
in history
and the
bells
ring in
the charge
of change.

looking forward
as the
smoke clears
from the
blaze
of millions
upon millions
of ballots
cast
in hope
in rage
in despair.

and a
nation
goes on
grows on
and learns
(or not)
from its
past
even as
it toils
in the
present
its eyes
on the
future.

    1. The title “Papuntang Maynila” means “to go to the city of Manila.” Here, the artist depicts a family from the rural zones of the Philippines making their way to the big city at the turn of the last century.
