Ein Wintermärchen

“The White Stag” – Ruth Sanderson, 1990

(Author’s Note:  Today’s poem is a preview to a three-part novelette that will be available online through this blog beginning Tuesday, 01st December 2015.  It is actually my second attempt at writing fantasy, this time in the form of a fairy tale inspired by the compilations of Andrew Lang, Charles Perrault, and Madame d’Aulnoy.  Feedback is, of course, greatly appreciated.)

in the

season

of snows,

the pale

stag

rides over

the plains:

wild

untamed

free.

never falling

to huntsman’s

bow;

eluding the

traps

set in

its path;

its galloping

gait

unbroken

unbridled

untameable.

unless

the queen

of the

fair folk

extends her

gentle hand

to stop

to stay

to quell

this ungentle

beast

and bring

forth a

prince

of snows,

comely and

pale,

to rule

by her

side

for always.
