A Musical Melancholy

“Play Me the Old Songs” – BGC, 13 November 2015

found

in an

old shop

in some

backstreet

of the

old city:

box

of records,

discs

from a

gentler age

when i

traipsed through

the streets

as a

schoolgirl.

and the

music

starts to

play

and a

melancholy

comes over

me:

and i

close

my eyes.

there is

a whiff

of old

books,

of chalk

dust,

the musty

smells

of ink

on paper;

the echo

of old

conversations

and schoolkid

chatter

in my

ears

so faint.

but

i am

no longer

that child,

wide-eyed

missy

i was

so long

ago.

with my

friends

and comrades

scattered to

the four

ends

of this

earth;

here i

sit

contemplating old

songs,

lost for

a while

in the

hallways

of my

youth.
