Burned Out on Both Ends

don’t open

the shutters;

keep the

light

off me

a while

longer.

let me

lie here;

the world

became

too much

for me;

the pain

won’t go

away,

my bones

seem weak

feel brittle

my joints

creak

in protest.

my mind

reels

from the

trauma:

the traffic

the smoke

the noise

incessant

demands on

body

soul

heart

head

all growing

increasingly

ludicrous

ridiculous

incredulous

with the

passage

of time.

let me

lie here

among my

pillows;

leave me

alone

for a

bit;

allow me

to sleep

to rest

to recover

from the

insanity

of the

world

beyond my

bed.
