Childhood Lingers

“Rocking Horse” – Manila, 23 August 2015

playtime

long over

but we

find comfort

still

in old

in broken

playthings:

the stories

dolls could

tell

if they

could but

speak;

rocking horse

weathered

saddle and

broken bridle

its rodeo

days done;

dollhouse

missing much

of its

furniture;

train sets

missing

a car

a rail

maybe two.

lock the

door

to the

playroom,

tear down

the old

playground

but

memories linger

memories stay

long after

we have

outgrown

childish things;

and in

aging

these return

adding a

sweetness

to temper

embittered

lives,

teaching them

that we

may not

return to

childhood –

but we

may relive

some measure

of it

as we

enter our

twilight.
