“Words That We Couldn’t Say” – BGC, 14 September 2015

found this

among the

flotsam

of my

things:

the letter –

flimsy little

note –

i wrote

you

in may.

written

on the

day

i felt

worthless,

thinking i’d

failed you.

and i

wonder

if you

would have

read it

had my

mother

handed it

over…

provided you

survived

the bollixing

you’d have

gone through

from kith

weeping,

from kin

grieving.

and i

think

you’d have

thrown it

away

unread

because it’s

me

in black

on white

written

in a

fit

of brokenness;

self-loathing,

regrets.

and i

wonder

if i

should keep

this still,

to be

given

to you

if bad

gets worse

and the

worst

should occur.

because

“i love you”

is hard

enough

to say

in person,

but what

happens

when the

one

who loves

you

is gone?
