Back to an Ending

"The Roman Garden" - Mendiola, 31 August 2015
“The Roman Garden” – Mendiola, 31 August 2015

take me

back

to where

things ended;

that last

hurrah,

that final

curtain call:

and in

my mind

i see

me,

almost full

grown

ready to

fly.

and i

remember

taking that

stage

raising my

voice,

stilling its

quaver,

my shaking,

my qualms;

head held

high,

unafraid little

queen

of those

boards –

one last

performance

to end

a stellar

run.

no one

knew

my heart

was sore,

no one

knew

i settled

for less

than the

best;

no one

knew

of the

pushing away;

nightmares

of inadequacy

of inferiority

of insecurity

of insanity

of imperfection.

all the

world

needed to

see

was a

girl

strong-willed

strong-minded

strident

of voice

iron-souled;

unafraid

unbowed

unbroken…

on the

outside.

take me

back

to where

we

parted ways

thinking –

as all

children do –

our paths

would never

cross

ever again;

and i

will show

you

how wrong

we both

were

and try

to make

amends.
