“Sweet Hearts” – Muntinlupa, 18 July 2015

when i

think

of unkind

words

uttered in

our youth,

of the

unflattering

things said:

of tokens

of sweetness

harder than

concrete

and capable

of

breaking

teeth;

souring tempers

yet

given with

a devotion

a loyalty

both sincere

yet naïve;

i smile –

albeit

a little

bittersweetly –

and think

of the

children

that we

were.

a score

hence

and i

look back

wryly;

thinking what

a fool

i was

to love

you

back then.

yet:

can i

still

consider what

i feel

foolishness

in this

day and

age?

perhaps but

perhaps not.

at least

the tokens

are sweeter

are softer

are more

delectable –

but remain,

nevertheless ,

truly sincere.
