“Poppies” – watercolor; Weena Alba-Contreras, May 2015

a poppy

for remembrance:

of things

past,

a childhood

ended,

of tears

shed

and dried,

of hearts

broken

mended

hurt

healed.

an explosion

of riotous

scarlet

against this

gray space

i’m in;

a silent

memory

of warmer

of happier

times

when one

was not

lonely,

was not

alone

and love

was sweet –

not this

lingering

taste of

bitterness.

but i

kiss

these vivid

petals

and scatter

them into

the wind,

hoping

against hope

they find

their way

to you

and perhaps

you will

remember

and those

blank spots

in your

memories

will be

filled

and you

could think

of me

kindly –

if not

fondly –

on your

journey;

and all

i will

ask

is that

you

come home

safe

and sound

and whole.

Incidentally…  Weena Alba-Contreras‘s work will soon be featured in my upcoming book A Jar of Starlight. Check out her other pieces on Etsy:  https://www.etsy.com/shop/weenaswatercolors
