The City-Mother

“Ang Lin-Ay sang Iloilo” – Iloilo City, 2012

i stare

out and over

my city:

guardian

to more

than a

million souls;

mother

to a

race

proud and

brave and

strong and

wise.

enemies

dare to

rush in,

disaster

dares to

break us:

but here

we are

and here

we stand –

eyes

facing forward

ears

keenly sensitive,

arms in

hand,

ready to

strike,

ready to

fight,

ready to

defend

our land,

our people.

generations

pass on,

generations

are born –

and i

shall be

there

wishing

them well,

welcoming

the new

into my

clan,

into my

city.

so long

as i

stand watch,

we will

not fail;

we will

never fall.
