“A Fire for Casting Spells By” – Paranaque, 2010

“Mirror, mirror, show to me him whose woman I will be.”

– from Nick Joaquin’s May Day Eve

welcome to

the witching

hour;

welcome to

this sacred

rite.

the fires

of beltane

have been

lit –

come,

young lovers,

join this

dance

celebrate your

youth

embrace your

power

behold your

beauty!

but beware

of the

visions

of the

prophecies

revealed

by candlelight:

what magic

what mystery

what goodness

what evil

flickers fretfully

in fitful

fire?

be wary

be canny

be coy

be brave:

for faces

in the

firelight

are your

own

personal portents

of magic

of mystic

power;

omens of

what may

come.

let the

flames

flicker

where they may;

let the

ashes

fall

where they must.
