Hallways and Havens

“Stairway to Somewhere” – Pansol, Laguna; July 2013

i remember

walking down

longer corridors

darker, cooler

spaces

up and down

winding staircases

welcome respite

against the

glimmering, glaring

heat of

the streets.

i remember

voices

calling

hither and yon

to and fro

a cacophony

of youthful

sounds

warbling

chirping

safe in

our school

our nest

our home

away

from home;

totally unaware

of the

dangers

outside

blissful

in the

knowledge

that we

were but

children

no cares

no worries

not just yet.

and then

you tell me

of the

time

you went

back to

our alma mater

our safe haven

and spoke

to me

of the

changes

how it

had

fallen…

and i

wept within

mourning

the glory

of our

shared

yesterday

wondering

what tomorrow

will bring.
