“Pink Peach Tree in Blossom (Reminiscence of Mauve)” – Vincent van Gogh, 1888

in sweltering

summer,

when breezes

are still,

and the air

hums

with the

droning buzz

of cicadas

in the green

outdoors:

melancholy

besets me.

and i

look out

gaze out

saddened and

stilled

by summer

stifling heat;

born in

borne on

autumn’s

cooling winds,

this is not

my season,

this is not

my time.

but i

marvel –

nevertheless –

at blossoms

unfurling in

the warmth,

fruit perfuming

my world.

i pine

for breezes,

for sea air,

for heartsong,

for passion

to awaken

a soul,

a heart

wilting,

languishing.

oh, for the

rains

to come,

oh, for the

blue skies

to cloud over!

oh, for the

coolness,

the blessed,

wonted

coolness

of fall.
