i used

to think

that he

would be

could be

should be

the one.

the prince

who shows up

at tale’s end:

flawless

peerless

priceless

paragon.

and i

never

thought of

you.

but some

princes

are bastards:

blighted

warped

perverse;

demons clad

in angel’s

feathers;

borrowed finery

on filthy

skin.

and some

princes

hide, elude…

pretend…

rapscallion rascals

hiding

hearts of gold

behind rough

masks.

broken-winged

angel;

my silver-voiced

princeling –

now i see

truth:

it wasn’t him,

it was never

him.

it was

always

you.
