A Dream of Loss

“Decayed Innocence” – Natalie Shau, year unknown

i woke up

trembling in every

nerve;

wracked by fear –

fear of the

worst kind:

i dreamt

i lost you;

that your

enemies

took your

life,

hid you

away –

vowed that i

would never

find you.

running through

darkened alleys,

peering into

morgues,

dreading that

the shrouded

figure

would be

you.

a mass card,

a wilted

bouquet –

gifts from an

adversary,

formidable and wicked –

come into

my hands…

my heart plummets,

my hope lost.

broken beyond

repair;

ruined past

all help –

but i cannot

give up;

i can never

give in…

i run around,

seeking you;

even if only

to say three

words

i could never

speak

in your

lifetime;

never to

your face.

but i

awaken

and i

shiver

in the morning

cold,

checking the

channels to

see…

and i

thank the

gods

in their

heavens.

you remain

still.
