The Instrument of Rage

La Belle Dame sans Merci (Frank Cadogan Cowper, 1926)
La Belle Dame sans Merci (Frank Cadogan Cowper, 1926)

o, ye gods!

make me

an instrument

of your

vengeance;

let mine be

the hand

you use

to strike

at the

unjust.

o, lord and lady!

make me

a channel

of your

rage;

your righteous

anger;

let it blaze

hot and roaring,

searing the

very marrow

of those

who would

betray

the good,

slander

the innocent,

oppose those who

are weak,

are ill,

are poor

of health

or heart.

o, masters!

let me

take up

the cudgels,

sharpen yon

blades

of indignation,

of fury,

of justice,

of death

that those who

dare to use

your names

in vain,

that those who

claim to

know you best –

but know you

not

may see the

error

of their

ways

and burn

and weep

and gnash

their teeth

in the

darkest

plain

till the end

of days.
